Unravel Me picks up two weeks after Juliette and crew arrive at the secret location that Kenji took her and Adam too. She is in a new place, with new people but hope is quick to leave her. She gets funny looks, parents won't allow their children near her and worst yet Adam is acting weird. What happens in this book flips everything you thought about everybody on it's head. The score Mafi 1 / Predictable Plot 0.
Mafi has such a beautiful voice. I lose myself in it. It's dark and light, and sad and tender and passionate.
Juliette is truly a sympathetic character, even when she is being a little "woe is me" she is still relatable, because wouldn't we all feel the same? Aren't we all human. I don't even like to be touched and I can't imagine a life where I couldn't get awesome hugs from my daughter, niece and nephews. I would die without that physical proof of their love.
Adam is distant in this book. His relationship with Juliette is very questionable by the end of the book. They are separated physically at least. No more, I can say no more.
What is new in this story, what does it add to the series? Well for one, we learn how Castle's crew survives and we also see them stand up to the Reestablishment. They are no longer running. They take risks and hit back. Juliette is key to the success of their resistance on several occasions but without the team of Kenji and Adam behind her she would not be as successful. They are a team and realize that.
The relationships among the characters are developed and change. No one in this book is 2D. Every single one of the characters shows a whole range of improvement, growth, and more personality than first book. Warner surprised me. He really is the most shocking thing about this book. We know he has feelings for Juliette but we aren't sure if they are real. Even after reading this and Destroy Me, I'm not sure I can trust him. My favorite moments in this book come from his interactions with Juliette.
"You," and he whispers, letter by letter he presses the the word into my skin before he hesitates. Then. Softer. His chest, heaving harder this time. His words, almost gasping this time. "You destroy me." I am falling to pieces in his arms.
and this...."I want to feel your skin on fire. I want to feel your heart racing next to mine and I want to know it's racing because of me, because you want me. Because you never," he breathes, "never want me to stop. I want every second. Every inch of you. I want all of it." And I drop dead, all over the floor. "Juliette." I can't understand why I can still hear him speaking because I am dead, I'm already dead, I've died over and over and over again.
There is a new baddie in town and he is seriously everything we thought Warner was times 100. So evil. So awesomely evil, he takes everything, the best laid plans, and highest hopes and just kills them.
Mafi has given me a gift, a great series to devour and two book boyfriends. What more can a girl want.
